Truckers Cause Just 25% of Heavy-Truck Injury Accidents in Europe

TrucksTruckers cause only 25% of human error-related, heavy-truck injury accidents in Europe, according to a new study.

The report found that over 85% of such accidents occurred in five situations: at an intersection, in a queue of vehicles, departing a lane, overtaking and single-truck accidents.

Fatigue was the main cause in 6% of accidents, with 90% of those occurring on highways or interurban roads and notably during the early hours of the morning or mid-afternoon.

The inability of drivers to adapt speed to conditions and failure to observe intersection rules were identified as frequent causes of injury accidents involving trucks.

The European Commission and the International Road Transport Union conducted the European Truck Accident Causation study by examining 624 injury accidents in seven European countries involving at least one heavy truck.
